Mulling over the whole Lapbooking phenomenon. I would love a couple of more things to add to our portfolio that looks “Schooly”… Any comments pros or cons? I have found several good websites and I am teetering towards it, especially for Rhiannon who wants something more concrete to show her work.

We enjoy lapbooking. It takes a little prep ahead of time, more if your kids are younger, but they enjoy it. It’s a nice, compact way to pull a lot of things together.
I have a general lapbooking article and some examples of ones we’ve made on my website if you’d like to take a look.
We’ve only done one true lapbook – mostly we “notebook”. But the lapbook is something Claire really likes now that it is done b/c she can look at it and talk through the topic. With the subjects in the notebook, it’s more of a “showcase” feel than a working document, KWIM? Our lapbook is sooo beginner – nothing fancy at all, but you can look at it whenever – just let me know.
Hmm… Thanks ladies, I think that we’ll give it a go this afternoon.
Jodi thanks for the website, it looks like a have a little bit of reading to do later.
Auburn93 I would love to see yours when we have another get together. Maybe the notebook too?
Lapbooking is great – it’s flexible – hands-on – creative!
Check out http://www.lapbooking.wordpress.com – wander through the pages with some standard sized papers – learn to fold – show your children how to and then decide on a topic to study together.
The ‘just do it’ mentality will get you started. Learn and improve as you go along.
Create first – edit later.
What an adventure!
Johanna
Sure – thanks for the warning as the notebook is sort of in shambles! (As is, pieces of paper that belong in the notebook never found their way there!)
I thought (blush) that a lapbook was the pillow with a hard surface with a tassle for holding your book.
Or for writing on.
I guess that’s not right???
Actually Steph, I had never heard of it until a little bit ago. Never really took a lot of interest in it when I saw it on Childsplay a while back. I guess that I filed it somewhere in the back of my brain. Fast forward to the last couple of weeks, Rhiannon has been so focused on Egypt and I was trying to figure out a way to put all of her hard work together. It dawned on me that maybe that was the way to go. It looks super easy and super fun. You’re kids can totally have control and pick the elements that work for them. At least that’s the way I’m going to do it.
I think probably I was turned off because it sounds like “Scrap-booking”!!!
The word – not the book. But I guess that’s what it is.
But books don’t give me the shudders like the other.
It’s this town, I think.
Ruined it for me.
So I blog, instead!!!
PS (again, sorry!)
I added you to Growing Naturally – you wanted me to, right?
It’s at

LOL, no I get the scrapbook shudder. There is no way! Yikes, I tend to cover my head and hide when people say scrapbook. I only shop in that section at the craft store because my kids love the paper, stamps, and supplies.
Yes Yes and double yes! As soon as I can get the graphic loaded it will be up!
Lapbooking is nice if you have a child who likes to do something concrete, like cutting and pasting, etc. It keeps my 5-year-old busy when she insists on “doing school.” But there is no way I could ever prepare my own lapbook plans. I use the Hands of a Child website – you can download files that you just print out on colored cardstock – so most of the thinking and prep is predone for you.
Very time consuming, though – I just use it when I feel a certain child needs some real Mommy time and I’m sick of baking cookies with them.
And it does feel nice to have something “to show” for your day. But really, my kids learn as much (if not more) just from reading books.

for children approx 12 yo +
We’re working through digital or online lapbooking at present.
cheers,
Johanna
